Man City win 3-0 at Anfield in first game since guilty verdict
Post
๐ฐ Playing amid the noise of the guilty verdict, Manchester City made their numerical advantage count to win 3-0 at Anfield.
๐ Key points
๐ฅ Liverpool's Ryan Gravenberch was sent off for a second yellow in the 62nd minute.
โก Haaland scored 2 minutes 36 seconds after the red card.
๐ฏ Substitute Doku and Cherki added further goals.
๐ City remain top with six wins from six.
๐ Liverpool lost for the first time under Iraola and are nine points behind.
๐ What happened
โ๏ธ This was City's first match since an independent commission found them guilty of all charges over breaches of Premier League financial rules. City's players were booed during the warm-up and before kick-off. The club has appealed and denies wrongdoing.
๐งค Liverpool were the more dangerous side in the first half. Gravenberch and Mac Allister went close, but Gianluigi Donnarumma made a series of saves. According to Sky Sports, City's xG before the red card was just 0.16.
๐ฅ The game turned in the 62nd minute. Already booked, Gravenberch tangled with Doku and received a second yellow; Gary Neville called it "very soft" on commentary.
โฝ Haaland swept in a deflected ball in the 65th minute, and three minutes later Doku curled into the top corner. Cherki then sold a dummy and finished in the 78th minute.
๐ By the numbers
โข City's league record: six wins from six, top of the table
โข Gap to Liverpool: nine points
โข City's xG before the red card: 0.16
โข Haaland's Premier League goals against the 'Big Six' since 2022-23: 27 (six more than anyone else)
๐ญ Why it matters
Enzo Maresca said the noise "will be with us in all the away games" and that "our noise is to win games like today". Haaland added: "I'm so proud of everyone." Whatever happens off the pitch, City showed no sign of wobbling on it.
City host PSG in the Champions League on 14 October and Ipswich on 17 October. Liverpool look to bounce back at Brentford on 17 October.
