Rivals say a one-season ban is not enough if Man City's appeal fails
Post
๐ฐ Premier League clubs believe a one-season punishment would not be enough for Man City if their appeal fails, according to a new report.
๐ Key points
๐บ Sky Sports laid out rival clubs' thinking on 7 October.
๐๏ธ Clubs do not expect City to be in the Premier League next season if the appeal fails.
โ๏ธ A points deduction that means just one year away is seen as too lenient.
๐๏ธ Jamie Carragher backed calls for a punishment lasting years.
๐
The appeal hearing is due before Christmas, with the case running into 2027.
๐ What happened
๐บ According to Sky Sports' Kaveh Solhekol, Premier League clubs do not expect City to be playing in the top flight next season if their appeal fails. Many believe a points deduction would not be sufficient if it meant only one season out of the Premier League.
โ๏ธ As summarised by Football365, the clubs' view is that "rules have to be respected by all clubs, no matter their size or status", and that a punishment lasting one season would not be enough for rules broken across multiple seasons.
๐๏ธ Liverpool great Jamie Carragher agreed. "It has to be done this season, because Man City need to be affected for next season," he said, adding: "This has gone on for years and years, so I think the punishment should go on for years and years."
๐
The independent commission found City used more than ยฃ830m of owner funding to inflate revenues over nine seasons. The appeal hearing is scheduled before Christmas, and the same three-person panel will then decide sanctions separately.
๐ By the numbers
โข Guilty: 114 of 115 charges
โข Period: nine seasons (2009-10 to 2017-18)
โข Alleged owner funding: more than ยฃ830m
๐ญ Why it matters
With rivals' expectations now going beyond a single relegation, the debate over sanctions will only intensify if the appeal fails. Sky Sports expects the case to run into 2027 at least.
In the meantime, City visit Liverpool on 11 October and host PSG in the Champions League on the 14th.
