Son's free-kick v Uzbekistan makes him Korea's record scorer with 59
Post
📰 Son Heung-min's free kick against Uzbekistan was his 59th international goal, moving him past Cha Bum-kun as South Korea's all-time leading men's scorer.
📌 Key points
⚽ Son scored an early first-half free kick against Uzbekistan for goal number 59.
👑 He passed Cha Bum-kun's 58 to top South Korea's men's scoring list.
🔢 The record came in his 151st international.
🔥 He scored three goals in the September–October four-match window.
🏆 Oh Se-hun added a second as Korea beat Uzbekistan 2-0.
📝 What happened
🎯 At Yongin Mireu Stadium on 6 October, Son started the friendly against Uzbekistan and, early in the first half, drove a low right-footed free kick into the bottom-right corner. He had won the free kick himself when his shot struck a defender's arm on the edge of the box.
👑 The goal took him to 59 in 151 caps, past former Korea manager Cha Bum-kun's 58 in 136. It comes roughly 15 years after Son's first international goal, against India at the 2011 Asian Cup, having made his debut in December 2010. He had already broken the appearance record, overtaking Cha and Hong Myung-bo, last October.
🤔 Goal 58 came with a question mark. The Korea Football Association officially credited Son with the 80th-minute strike in the 4-1 defeat by Uruguay on 28 September, which followed a Lee Kang-in cross, but Son said he "didn't feel a touch" and would feel uneasy if it counted. This time there was no doubt.
🥹 "I'm overcome with emotion. Even as a child I never took this place for granted," Son said after the match. "It's not just my goals that are precious – all the time I've spent with the national team is precious." Oh Se-hun's second-half header sealed a 2-0 win.
📊 By the numbers
• Son Heung-min: 59 goals in 151 caps
• Cha Bum-kun: 58 goals in 136 caps
• Son's goals in this four-match window: 3
• Korea 2-0 Uzbekistan
🔭 Why it matters
One of the longest-standing records in Korean men's football finally has a new owner. Having already taken the appearance record, Son now holds both of the national team's headline marks.
The question now is how many more the 34-year-old can add. Robert Moreno's side play two away friendlies in November.
