Gladbach avoid 63-year first, win 3-2 at Stuttgart for first win
Post
📰 Gladbach, on the brink of an unwanted record after six straight defeats, won 3-2 at Stuttgart for their first win of the season.
📌 Key points
🏆 Gladbach won 3-2 at Stuttgart on 23 October.
😮💨 Defeat would have meant the Bundesliga's first ever 0-7 start in 63 years.
👠 Scally levelled with a backheel and Machino put them ahead.
🌟 Seventeen-year-old Wael Mohya added the third on 66 minutes.
🛡️ In the Pokal on 27 October they beat Karlsruhe 2-0 with ten men.
📝 What happened
😱 It started badly again. After five minutes, goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas punched Ermedin Demirovic's effort into his own net. Gladbach had conceded 21 goals in their six previous games.
👠 Joe Scally levelled on 38 minutes with a fine backheel. Shuto Machino put them ahead six minutes after the restart, and 17-year-old Wael Mohya made it 3-1 on 66. Demirovic pulled one back for Stuttgart on 83, but it was too late.
🗣️ Alexander Blessin, who had ten players injured, said his side had to go through a 'valley of torment'. Sporting director Rouven Schroder said the players had 'rewarded themselves to the maximum' and that the club 'will not look for excuses'.
🛡️ The momentum carried into the cup. Against Karlsruhe in the second round on 27 October, Robin Hack put Gladbach ahead, Philipp Sander was sent off on 40 minutes, and ten men held on for a 2-0 win and a place in the last 16.
📊 By the numbers
• Stuttgart 2-3 Gladbach (1-1 at half-time)
• First win at the seventh attempt after six defeats
• Still bottom on 3 points
• Stuttgart have lost five of seven league games
🔭 Why it matters
Dusseldorf (1991-92), Mainz (2020-21) and Bochum (2022-23) all took points in their seventh game. Gladbach have now avoided that unwanted record too, but they are still bottom. They host promoted Paderborn on Saturday 31 October, while Stuttgart, who drew with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, travel to Leverkusen the same day.
