Ligue 1 clubs want Ligue 1 Plus scrapped as TV rights tender nears

📰 Ligue 1 clubs want to wind up the league-run channel Ligue 1 Plus and find a new broadcaster, according to a report. 📌 Key points 📺 Ligue 1 Plus was created after DAZN ended a five-year deal after one year. 💸 L'Équipe says clubs like the coverage but feel it earns far too little. 📉 It is seen as the biggest single factor in French football's financial crisis. 🤝 LFP Media has contacted Canal Plus, RMC Sport, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. 📅 A tender is expected in November, with a new deal from 2027-28. 📝 What happened 📺 Ligue 1 Plus is the broadcaster the league set up itself when DAZN pulled out of its five-year Ligue 1 contract after a single season. It launched last season and is now in its second year. 💸 According to L'Équipe, clubs want it ended quickly despite its editorial success, because revenue is minimal. It is described as the largest contributor to the current financial crisis in French football. 🤝 Olivier Bramly, who became director general of LFP Media earlier this year, has already approached Canal Plus, RMC Sport, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. His predecessor Nicolas de Tavernost had wanted to keep the channel until 2029. ⚖️ New legislation allowing the rights to be sold as a single bundle is expected to attract bigger bids. Lille president Olivier Létang said: "We expect more money to flow for clubs. Like my colleagues, I am worried about that." 📊 By the numbers • DAZN deal: five years planned, ended after one • Ligue 1 Plus now in its second season • Tender expected in November 2026, new deal from 2027-28 🔭 Why it matters TV money is central to Ligue 1 club finances. Failure to land a strong deal in November could deepen the crisis, and it will be worth watching whether a streamer such as Netflix enters the race.
