📝 What happened
🎙️ At his pre-match press conference on 13 October, Luis Enrique was asked about City's guilty verdict for breaching Premier League financial rules. "The first thing when you hear that, it's a surprise, but I think we need to respect the process and wait for the final decision," he said.
🏆 He went on: "If I speak only about football and the things that I saw on the pitch, Man City deserve those trophies," adding: "I hope they can avoid that sanction." According to French Football Weekly, he also said there is a lot of noise around big clubs and it is City's turn, and that trophies won on the pitch stay on the pitch.
🔥 Daniel Riolo of RMC's After Foot called the remarks "truly scandalous" and said Luis Enrique should only talk about football, because when he talks about anything else it is catastrophic.
⚖️ The Premier League said City used "sham" commercial contracts as part of schemes to inflate revenue and understate costs by more than £900m. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed; possible punishments range from fines and a points deduction to relegation and being stripped of titles.
📊 By the numbers
• City were found guilty on 114 of 115 charges and have appealed
• More than £900m in inflated revenue and understated costs, per the Premier League
• Enzo Maresca's City have won all eight games in all competitions
🔭 Why it matters
While managers such as David Moyes and Michael Carrick criticised City after the verdict, the coach of City's next opponents openly took their side. A former Barcelona team-mate and close friend of Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique has given the tie an extra storyline before a ball is kicked. PSG and City meet at 21:00 CET on 14 October.
