Vandevoordt saves penalty, Gruda strikes as Leipzig beat PSV 1-0

📰 A penalty save from Maarten Vandevoordt and a Brajan Gruda winner gave RB Leipzig a 1-0 win over PSV, their first in this season's Champions League. 📌 Key points ⚽ Leipzig beat PSV 1-0 at home on 13 October. 🧤 Vandevoordt kept out Perišić's first-half penalty with his trailing leg. 🎯 Gruda's deflected shot in the 75th minute was the winner. 📈 It is their first league-phase win after a 4-1 loss at Como. 🗓️ Leipzig travel to Bayern Munich on 17 October. 📝 What happened 🧤 PSV were awarded a first-half penalty after a VAR check for handball by Ridle Baku. Ivan Perišić went down the middle, but Leipzig keeper Maarten Vandevoordt kept it out with a trailing leg as he dived. 🎯 The deadlock broke in the 75th minute. A corner was headed out to the edge of the box, Brajan Gruda took a touch and hit it hard, and the ball took touches off Perišić and goalkeeper Matěj Kovář's hand on its way in. 😮‍💨 Leipzig lost 4-1 at Como in their opener, and an uneven start had led to talk of Demichelis being sacked and even of Julian Nagelsmann returning. A 6-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend and now a first Champions League win have changed the mood. 📊 By the numbers • PSV have missed two penalties in a row for the first time since November 2020 • PSV have won one of their last 21 away games against Bundesliga sides (D5 L15) • PSV's last win in Germany came against Eintracht Braunschweig in the 1977-78 UEFA Cup • Leipzig have 3 points from two Champions League games 🔭 Why it matters Two wins in a row ease the pressure on Demichelis for now. But the next game is away at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on 17 October, an immediate test of whether the recovery is real.
