Poyet calls Son 'a god in Korea' and pitches himself for the LAFC job
Post
๐ฐ Gus Poyet, overlooked for the Korea job, has called Son Heung-min 'a god in Korea' and openly put himself forward to coach LAFC.
๐ Key points
๐ Poyet compared Son to Messi in Argentina and Ronaldo in Portugal.
๐ He became interested after LAFC sacked their coach and is waiting for a call.
๐ฐ๐ท He said the KFA told him he had not made the final two for the Korea job.
๐ Poyet led Jeonbuk Hyundai to the K League 1 and Korea Cup double in 2025.
โฝ He named Son and Denis Bouanga as the two best forwards in MLS.
๐ What happened
๐๏ธ According to Interfootball, Poyet told the YouTube channel Dual Nuts, in an interview released on 9 October (Korean time), that "Son is a god in Korea". He said that during national team camps the TV cameras show Son about five times in the first half even when he is on the bench, and the crowd reacts loudly.
๐ฐ๐ท Poyet was interested in the Korea job after Hong Myung-bo left. He thought he was a likely choice, and former Jeonbuk players even sent congratulations before he had been contacted. Weeks later, the KFA told him he had not made the final two.
๐ He said he has long wanted to work in MLS, became interested after LAFC sacked their coach and would be delighted to get a call โ effectively recommending himself.
๐งณ After leaving Jeonbuk, a move to the Saudi Pro League fell through and he is out of work. He played for Chelsea and Tottenham, and has managed Sunderland, Real Betis, Bordeaux and Greece, among others.

๐ญ Why it matters
LAFC have gone four league games without a win under interim coach Xavi Tamarit since sacking Marc Dos Santos. With a coach who knows Son well putting his hand up, Korean fans will be watching who LAFC choose. The KFA's selection process may also come under fresh scrutiny.
