Moreno's Korea end four-game run with Uzbek win, verdict in November
Post
📰 Korea under interim coach Moreno finished their September–October four-match run with two wins, a draw and a defeat after a 2-0 win over Uzbekistan.
📌 Key points
⚽ Beat Ecuador 3-0 on 24 September to win his debut.
📉 Lost heavily, 1-4, to Uruguay on 28 September.
😶 Drew 0-0 with Venezuela in Ulsan on 2 October.
✅ Beat Uzbekistan 2-0 in Yongin on 6 October.
🧢 Moreno's interim contract runs until the end of November.
📝 What happened
🟢 Spaniard Roberto Moreno took charge of the national team as interim coach. He made a bright start, beating Ecuador 3-0 in his first game.
🔴 Four days later, however, Korea lost 1-4 to Uruguay, and on 2 October drew 0-0 with FIFA 47th-ranked Venezuela at Ulsan Munsu Stadium. They were out-shot 7 to 12, and the domestic press used phrases such as "a dire display" and "a frustrating, stodgy draw".
✅ They bounced back in the final match. At Yongin Mireu Stadium on the 6th, Son Heung-min scored a free-kick in the 6th minute for his 59th international goal, overtaking Cha Bum-kun to become the outright record scorer for the Korean men's national team, and Oh Se-hun sealed it with a header in the 60th minute. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo also shone with his saves (Financial News).
🗂️ According to the Korea Times, the Korea Football Association will watch the six matches Moreno takes charge of through November before deciding on a permanent coach to lead the side at the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia in January 2027.
📊 By the numbers
• Moreno's four games: W2 D1 L1 (6 scored, 5 conceded)
• v Uzbekistan: won 2-0 (Son Heung-min 6', Oh Se-hun 60')
• Son Heung-min's 59th international goal, outright Korean men's record
• Interim contract: until the end of November, six games in total
🔭 Why it matters
The two remaining November games are effectively Moreno's final interview. After the Uzbekistan match he said the identity he wants to instil had come through to some extent, but with Korea again second best on possession and shots in that game, opinion remains divided. The November results will decide who leads the national team into the Asian Cup.
