Genesio's Marseille job reportedly at risk with one win in five, 17th
Post
📰 After four defeats in their first five league games, Marseille coach Bruno Genesio's job is reportedly under threat. The club has announced nothing.
📌 Key points
🗣️ L'Équipe's reporter said it would be "a big surprise" if Genesio is still there at Christmas.
📉 OM have one win and four defeats from five games, 3 points, 17th place.
🏆 Four defeats in the first five league games is a first in the club's history.
💰 A reported salary of €400,000 a month makes a sacking costly.
🔁 French outlets have named Conceição, Galtier and Tudor as possible successors.
📝 What happened
📉 Genesio replaced Habib Beye on 1 July, but Marseille won only one of their first five Ligue 1 games and lost five of six in all competitions, an unwanted club first. A 2-1 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in Le Classique on 20 September left them 17th.
🗣️ On 23 September, L'Équipe journalist Loïc Tanzi said on La Chaîne L'Équipe that "it would be a big surprise if Genesio is still there at Christmas". Reports say Genesio's repeated public complaints about the club's situation have angered his superiors, who also wanted him to play young players to raise their sale value.
💰 Sacking him would not be simple. Genesio reportedly earns €400,000 gross a month, and the club's finances are so tight that key players were sold in the summer without replacements. Genesio has said he will not resign.
🔁 Succession talk has already started. French outlets, citing pundit Daniel Riolo, said a sacking was likely after the international break and named Sérgio Conceição, Christophe Galtier and Igor Tudor as candidates. Conceição was also on Marseille's shortlist alongside Genesio last summer.
📊 By the numbers
• League: P5 W1 L4, 3 points, 17th (7 scored, 8 conceded)
• All competitions: P6 W1 L5
• Reported salary: €400,000 gross a month
• Source: L'Équipe (high reliability) — reports, not confirmed
🔭 Why it matters
Marseille's first game after the break is away at Troyes on 11 October, and it could decide Genesio's future. Changing coach amid a financial squeeze would send the club's season plans back to square one.
