Bayern draw up 11-man shortlist for veteran keeper behind Urbig
Post
📰 Bayern Munich are reportedly drawing up a list of veteran goalkeepers to support Jonas Urbig as they prepare for life after Manuel Neuer.
📌 Key points
🧤 Bayern are preparing to reshape their goalkeeping department in case Neuer retires.
👑 23-year-old Jonas Urbig is earmarked as the future number one.
🔍 They want a veteran happy to be number two, not a rival for Urbig.
📋 Baumann, Leno and Pope are among 11 names reported on the list.
⏳ Bayern will settle Neuer's and Ulreich's futures before moving.
📝 What happened
🧤 Sky Germany reported on 5 October that Bayern are planning for the post-Neuer era. The 40-year-old could retire next summer, and talks over the future of back-up Sven Ulreich are also ongoing. The starting role is already set aside for Urbig.
🔍 The key is the profile. According to Sky, Bayern are not after a young keeper to compete with Urbig but an experienced one who brings stability and leadership and accepts a supporting role. A modest transfer fee is a priority.
📋 Bundesliga options include Marvin Schwäbe (Köln, contract up in summer 2027), Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim) and Finn Dahmen (Augsburg). Abroad, Bernd Leno (Fulham), Nick Pope (Newcastle), Koen Casteels (Al-Qadsiah), Kevin Trapp (Paris FC), Frederik Rønnow (Union Berlin), Lukáš Hrádecký (Monaco), Juan Musso (Atlético Madrid) and Rui Silva (Sporting) have been mentioned.
🗣️ Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg called Baumann "very interesting", saying he is held in very high regard and that Hoffenheim would not stand in his way. Bulinews adds that Pope will be a free agent in summer 2027 and has dropped down the pecking order at Newcastle.
📊 By the numbers
• Neuer is 40, Urbig 23
• 11 goalkeepers mentioned (three in the Bundesliga, eight abroad)
• Leno and Pope are both 34
🔭 Why it matters
It is a sign that Neuer's long reign in the Bayern goal is nearing its end. The plan is to hand the gloves to Urbig while keeping a veteran on hand for emergencies.
No concrete negotiations have started yet. Fittingly, Bayern visit Augsburg, where candidate Dahmen plays, on 10 October.
