Second-tier sides knock out Schalke, Hoffenheim and Mainz in Pokal

📰 Schalke, Hoffenheim and Mainz all went out of the DFB-Pokal second round to second-tier sides. 📌 Key points 💥 Three Bundesliga clubs lost to second-tier teams in round two. 🧤 Schalke lost 2-0 at Dresden, with a Karius error for the second. 🎯 Hoffenheim drew 1-1 at Kiel and lost the shootout 4-3. 😤 Mainz lost 2-0 at Bochum and Fischer did not hold back. 🎲 The last-16 draw takes place on 1 November. 📝 What happened 🧤 In front of 30,500 in Dresden on 28 October, Schalke barely created a chance. Patrice Covic turned in Simon Straudi's cross on 53 minutes, and Christoph Daferner headed the second from a corner on 88 after Loris Karius misjudged the ball. Edin Dzeko, back from a head injury, made no impact. Coach Miron Muslic said Dresden 'won deservedly' and that Schalke must accept it without excuses. 🎯 The same night Hoffenheim led through Adam Hlozek on 11 minutes, but Adrian Kapralik equalised on 22. Tim Lemperle's apparent second was ruled out for offside after a VAR check. It stayed 1-1 after extra time; Leon Avdullahu blazed over in the shootout and Kiel goalkeeper Lio Rothenhagen saved from Mats Rots to win it 4-3. Three days earlier Hoffenheim had beaten Leverkusen 3-0. 😤 On 27 October Mainz conceded to Christian Rasmussen straight after the restart and to substitute Philipp Hofmann on 75 minutes at Bochum. Urs Fischer said it was 'one of the worst, if not the worst' game since he came to Mainz. 📊 By the numbers • Dresden 2-0 Schalke (attendance 30,500) • Kiel 1-1 Hoffenheim (4-3 on penalties) • Bochum 2-0 Mainz • Bundesliga clubs out: Schalke, Hoffenheim, Mainz, Union (0-5 at Cologne) 🔭 Why it matters With Dresden, Kiel and Bochum knocking out top-flight sides, this season's cup has already produced plenty of upsets. Kiel only won their first league game of the season on 25 October, which makes their win even more striking. The last-16 draw is on 1 November, with ties on 1 and 2 December.
