City-bound Sullivan, 17, becomes youngest USMNT scorer in 3-0 v Mexico
Post
๐ฐ Man City-bound 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan became the youngest scorer in US men's national team history with a goal against Mexico.
๐ Key points
โฝ Sullivan scored with a lob in the 62nd minute against Mexico.
๐ At 17 years and 5 days, he set a new USMNT record.
๐ He broke a record Mathis Albert had set only days earlier.
๐ The USA beat Mexico 3-0 in Glendale, Arizona.
๐งข It was only Sullivan's third senior international appearance.
๐ What happened
๐๏ธ The USA beat Mexico 3-0 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on 3 October (local time). Julian Hall opened the scoring in the first half, and in the 62nd minute Sullivan intercepted a pass from the Mexico goalkeeper and lobbed the ball into an unguarded net. Malik Tillman added a third in the 84th minute.
๐ According to ESPN, Sullivan was 17 years and 5 days old, making him the youngest scorer in USMNT history. The previous mark of 17 years and 131 days had been set by Mathis Albert days earlier; before that, Christian Pulisic held the record at 17 years and 253 days.
๐ฃ๏ธ Sullivan said afterwards that he was simply hoping his chip would not hit the bar or sail over, calling it the biggest pinch-me moment of his life. Mauricio Pochettino described him as a "warrior" and said this type of player is hard to find.
๐ต Sullivan plays for Philadelphia Union and agreed a deal with Man City back in 2024, when he was 14. He will join City once he becomes eligible at 18.
๐ By the numbers
โข Age at goal: 17 years, 5 days (USMNT record)
โข Previous record: 17 years, 131 days (Mathis Albert)
โข USA 3-0 Mexico, Sullivan scoring in the 62nd minute
โข First goal in his third cap
๐ญ Why it matters
A prospect City secured early is quickly making his mark at senior international level. Scoring against fierce rivals Mexico made the moment even bigger, and he is now firmly seen as one of American football's brightest young talents.
Sullivan is still at Philadelphia for now, and the big question is whether he will compete for a first-team place at City straight away or head out on loan to gain experience first.
