Moreno's Korea held 0-0 by Venezuela in Ulsan as attack draws a blank
Post
๐ฐ Moreno's Korea drew 0-0 with Venezuela in Ulsan without finding a clear answer in attack. Four days later they beat Uzbekistan 2-0.
๐ Key points
๐๏ธ The friendly was played at Ulsan Munsu World Cup Stadium on 2 October.
โฝ The attack was so stifled that the first shot came only in the 45th minute.
๐ Korea were out-shot 7 to 12 by Venezuela.
๐งข Son Heung-min missed a clear chance but scored his 59th goal on the 6th.
๐๏ธ Moreno's side finished the four-match run W2 D1 L1.
๐ What happened
โฝ Moreno went with a 4-4-2 with Son Heung-min and Oh Hyeon-gyu up front, but in the first half Korea were pushed back by Venezuela's intense pressing. The first shot was a long-range effort from Cho Hyun-taek in the 45th minute, and Oh Hyeon-gyu then found the net, only for it to be ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper.
๐งข In the second half Son Heung-min got through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but shot straight at him. According to OSEN, Son managed just two shots and three touches in the opposition box in 85 minutes, and could not move past the 58 international goals he shares with Cha Bum-kun in this match.
๐ค According to Money Today, Kim Min-jae was caught throwing his boots as he came off to the bench in the second half. Moreno admitted Korea should have been better than against Uruguay and created more chances, but said he would not change the overall framework because of one result.
โ
In the final match of the four-game run, at Yongin Mireu Stadium on the 6th, the team beat Uzbekistan 2-0. Son Heung-min scored a free-kick in the 6th minute for his 59th international goal, overtaking Cha Bum-kun to become the outright record scorer for the Korean men's national team, and Oh Se-hun added a header in the 60th minute (Financial News).
๐ By the numbers
โข Shots v Venezuela: Korea 7 โ Venezuela 12
โข Son Heung-min v Venezuela: 85 minutes, 2 shots, 20/27 passes completed
โข v Uzbekistan: Korea won 2-0 (Son Heung-min 6', Oh Se-hun 60')
โข Moreno's four games: Ecuador 3-0 W, Uruguay 1-4 L, Venezuela 0-0, Uzbekistan 2-0 W
๐ญ Why it matters
The criticism that grew after the poor display against Venezuela eased with the win over Uzbekistan. But Korea were second best on possession (46 to 54) and shots (10 to 12) in that game too, so performance issues remain. Moreno will be assessed for the permanent job after two more friendlies in November.
