UEFA watching City's PL case and will decide on action once it ends
Post
๐ฐ UEFA are keeping a close eye on the Man City case and will decide on their own action once the Premier League process is over.
๐ Key points
๐ UEFA will wait for the Premier League process to finish.
๐ Five of the upheld charges relate to UEFA's financial rules.
โณ Different limitation periods make any UEFA action uncertain.
โ
No sporting sanction yet, so City's European campaign is unaffected.
๐
City host PSG in the Champions League on 14 October.
๐ What happened
๐ช๐บ Sky Sports reported on 6 October that UEFA are monitoring City's Premier League disciplinary process and will decide whether to act only after it has fully concluded. UEFA have not said what sanctions might be considered.
๐ The independent commission found that City disguised ยฃ830m of owner funding as sponsorship income over nine seasons. Five of the upheld charges relate to breaches of UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules between 2009 and 2018.
โ๏ธ City and UEFA have history. In 2020 UEFA handed City a two-year European ban and a โฌ30m fine, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the ban and cut the fine to โฌ10m.
โณ According to Football Today, UEFA's financial regulations have different limitation periods from the Premier League's, so it is unclear what UEFA could now do. City continue to deny wrongdoing and have appealed.
๐ By the numbers
โข FFP-related charges upheld: 5
โข Alleged disguised funding: ยฃ830m (nine seasons)
โข 2020 UEFA case: two-year ban overturned at CAS, fine cut to โฌ10m
โข Appeal: due to conclude within 12 weeks of filing
๐ญ Why it matters
If UEFA act separately from the Premier League, the fallout could reach City's place in European competition. Sky Sports say the appeal must conclude within 12 weeks of filing, though the written judgment could slip into January 2027.
For now, City face Liverpool away on 11 October and PSG at home on 14 October.
