Palmer, James and Caicedo target Bournemouth return for Chelsea
Post
📰 Chelsea are using the international break to focus on the recoveries of Palmer, James, João Pedro and Caicedo, with an eye on bringing them back for the Bournemouth game on 10 October.
📌 Key points
🩹 Cole Palmer withdrew from the England squad with a minor muscle problem.
🧢 Captain Reece James has been out with a hamstring issue since the Hull game.
🦵 João Pedro injured his knee against Hull and was left out of the Brazil squad.
⏱️ Caicedo has played just 14 minutes this season after a calf injury.
🗓️ All four are aiming to return for the home game against Bournemouth on 10 October.
📝 What happened
🩹 According to the Evening Standard, Palmer pulled out of the squad with a minor muscle injury. It was also a load-management decision by Chelsea to make sure the groin problem that troubled him last season does not return. England manager Tuchel said Chelsea had told him Palmer had been playing through discomfort and pain.
🦵 João Pedro hurt his knee in the 2-2 draw with Hull City and has been advised to rest for around three weeks. Reece James has also been out with a hamstring problem since that same Hull game, and Tuchel explained that James had not quite completed his recovery and so could not join up with the squad.
⏱️ Because of a calf injury picked up in pre-season, Caicedo has managed only 14 minutes of football this season. He attempted a comeback against Brighton but was substituted again, and Alonso admitted his return seemed to have been rushed.
🔁 Alonso has given the players who did not go on international duty nine days off. However, Chelsea have not yet confirmed anyone's return, and the Bournemouth date should be seen as a target rather than a certainty.
📊 By the numbers
• Caicedo's minutes this season: 14
• João Pedro's recommended rest: around 3 weeks
• Last 2 league games before the break: Hull 2-2 draw, Brentford 0-3 defeat
• Players targeting a return v Bournemouth: Palmer, James, Pedro, Caicedo, plus Palestra and Emegha
🔭 Why it matters
Chelsea are without a win in three league games, so the return of key players is badly needed. With five games crammed into October starting with Bournemouth (10 October), how quickly — and how carefully — the returning players are used could decide the month's results.
