Lisandro Martínez slams Man Utd recruitment; Rooney hits back
Post
📰 After the defeat in Madrid, Lisandro Martínez went public with sharp criticism of how Manchester United are being run.
📌 Key points
🎙️ Martínez said he expects more from the club and will not keep quiet.
💸 He said the squad needed more signings and he expected more from the technical director.
🔄 He asked what happens in "other areas" while managers keep changing.
🗣️ Wayne Rooney said Martínez was disrespecting his team-mates.
🤐 Michael Carrick said he had not seen the interview.
📝 What happened
🎙️ United lost 2-0 at Atlético Madrid on 13 October. Speaking on UEFA Champions League Today, Martínez said: "We're not playing well as a team. You can see the disconnection. We can't [string] three or four passes together, and the body language [is bad]." He added: "We take the responsibility, but also as a club, I expect more. I'm not gonna close my mouth."
🏆 "We need more ambition," he said. "We need to talk more about winning Champions League, talk more about winning the Premier League instead of other things. Every season, we're talking about the same thing… if we don't say the truth, nothing will change."
💸 To Amazon Prime he went further: "Really poor. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment." Asked whether he expected more investment, he replied: "I expect more. 100%. I expect more from our technical director." CBS Sports identified that as Jason Wilcox.
🔄 According to GiveMeSport, he also said United had "created a base to build an amazing team, but we haven't", and: "You can keep changing and changing and changing manager, but what about other areas?" Of Carrick, he said: "He does his best."
📊 By the numbers
• Result at Atlético: lost 0-2
• United winless run: 5 games
• Next game: Leeds away, 18 October
🔭 Why it matters
It is rare for a first-choice defender to aim at the technical director and the club's hierarchy on live TV. Rooney said on Amazon Prime: "He's disrespecting his teammates… It's not going to help the situation at the club at the minute." Carrick said straight after a game was not the time to discuss it and that United must focus on Sunday's trip to Leeds on 18 October. With pressure already on Carrick, the question is whether this becomes a wider rift.
