Ngumoha, 18, makes England debut as third-youngest after Rooney, Jude
Post
๐ฐ Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha came off the bench against Czechia to become England's third-youngest competitive debutant.
๐ Key points
โฝ England won 2-0 away to Czechia in Prague on 30 September.
๐ Ngumoha came on for Saka in the 71st minute.
๐งข At 18 years and 31 days, he is the third-youngest ever.
๐ Only Rooney and Bellingham made competitive debuts at a younger age.
๐๏ธ He had already made his first appearance in a friendly against New Zealand in June.
๐ What happened
โฝ England beat Czechia 2-0 in the Nations League at the Fortuna Arena in Prague on 30 September, with goals from Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane. According to Goal, Ngumoha replaced Bukayo Saka in the 71st minute and played around 19 minutes.
๐ Liverpool's official website said Ngumoha made his competitive debut aged 18 years and 31 days, making him England's third-youngest competitive debutant. The only players to appear in a competitive game at a younger age are Wayne Rooney (17 years, 156 days) and Jude Bellingham (17 years, 269 days). The record pushes Callum Hudson-Odoi, who debuted at 18 years and 135 days against the same opponents, Czechia, in 2019, out of the top three.
๐ฃ๏ธ Speaking to ITV, Ngumoha said that when he knew he was coming on he felt hunger, fight and belief, adding that he had always been confident he could pull on an England shirt at 18.
๐ He had been left out of the squad for the previous game, a 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley, but got his chance straight away. He had earlier won his first cap aged 17 in a pre-World Cup friendly against New Zealand in June.
๐ By the numbers
โข Debut age: 18 years, 31 days (third-youngest competitive debut)
โข Rooney 17 years, 156 days; Bellingham 17 years, 269 days
โข Minutes against Czechia: around 19 (on in the 71st minute)
โข Liverpool this season: appeared in 5 of 7 competitive games (Goal)
๐ญ Why it matters
England using Ngumoha in a competitive game shows how highly they rate his development. According to Goal, he is in contention to feature in Liverpool's game against Manchester City on 11 October, and the question is whether the confidence gained with England will lead to more minutes for his club.
