Moreno: 'I'm constructing a building' โ Korea boss sticks to his plan
Post
๐ฐ After the 0-0 draw with Venezuela, interim coach Moreno compared building a team to constructing a building and said he would keep the overall framework. Four days later Korea beat Uzbekistan 2-0.
๐ Key points
๐๏ธ The Venezuela game in Ulsan on 2 October ended in a 0-0 draw.
๐ฃ๏ธ Moreno said he would not knock the building down over one game.
๐๏ธ There had been only six training sessions across his first three games in charge.
โ
Korea beat Uzbekistan 2-0 on the 6th to finish the four-match run.
๐จ Moreno felt the identity he wanted to instil had come through to some extent.
๐ What happened
๐๏ธ Korea drew 0-0 with Venezuela in a friendly at Ulsan Munsu World Cup Stadium on 2 October. According to Money Today, Son Heung-min and Oh Hyeon-gyu started up front, but in the first half Korea were pushed back by Venezuela's intense pressing and managed effectively just one shot. Shots finished 7 to 12.
๐ฃ๏ธ After the match Moreno said he was building a building one floor at a time. Rather than tearing the whole building down because of a bad result, he would re-examine the doors and windows and adjust what needs fixing. He also pointed to a lack of preparation time, saying they had managed only six training sessions over three games.
โ
Korea beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at Yongin Mireu Stadium on the 6th. Son Heung-min scored a 6th-minute free-kick for his 59th international goal, becoming the outright record scorer for the Korean men's national team, and Oh Se-hun added a header in the 60th minute (Financial News).
๐จ After the match Moreno said the identity they wanted to instil had come through to some extent, and that he had seen the team attack and defend together and get through difficult moments. He said no player is bigger than the team and that for the next camp he would look at performance rather than reputation. He explained that Lee Kang-in, substituted at half-time, had asked to come off himself because of an ankle injury (My Daily, Money Today).
๐ By the numbers
โข Shots v Venezuela: Korea 7, Venezuela 12
โข v Uzbekistan: won 2-0, possession 46 to 54, shots 10 to 12 (Financial News)
โข Moreno's four games: W2 D1 L1 (Ecuador 3-0 W, Uruguay 1-4 L, Venezuela 0-0, Uzbekistan 2-0 W)
๐ญ Why it matters
Moreno, who vowed not to knock the building down, has at least earned grounds to hold on with a win in the final match. But with Korea again behind on possession and shots against Uzbekistan, questions over performances remain. The two remaining November games of his interim contract are the final test that will decide whether he gets the permanent job.
