City's appeal on 114 breaches could reportedly be settled by Christmas
Post
📰 Reports suggest Manchester City's appeal against the 114-breach verdict could be settled around Christmas, speeding up the clock on the biggest case in Premier League history.
📌 Key points
📨 City lodged their appeal against the commission's verdict on the night of 1 October.
⏱️ Under the fast-track rules, the appeal hearing must take place within 12 weeks.
📅 The hearing can last five days at most, with a decision due within 30 days.
🏟️ Sky Sports say rival clubs expect City to be relegated if the appeal fails.
🙅 City deny wrongdoing and say they will prove their innocence.
📝 What happened
📨 After an independent commission upheld breaches of financial rules from 2009-10 to 2017-18 in late September, City lodged their appeal on the night of 1 October, just before the 2 October deadline. The club say the ruling contains significant errors of law, principle and fact.
⏱️ Football Insider reported on 4 October that under fast-track disciplinary rules approved this summer, the appeal must be completed within 12 weeks, meaning a verdict could come around Christmas. According to Tribal Football, the hearing can run for no more than five days in one block, with a decision due within 30 days of it ending. City could, however, argue those rules did not exist when they were charged in February 2023, which might push the timetable back.
🗣️ Sky Sports reported on 5 October that many clubs feel a points deduction alone would not be enough for breaches spanning nine seasons, and that they do not expect City to be a Premier League club next season if the appeal fails. Pundit Jamie Carragher insisted it must be dealt with this season.
⚖️ The same three-person commission will set the sanction after hearing the league's proposals. Outlets differ on whether that hearing will run alongside the appeal or after it, and no date has been announced.
📊 By the numbers
• Breaches upheld: 114 of 115
• Appeal hearing deadline: 12 weeks from lodging (max five days)
• Decision deadline: within 30 days of the hearing
• Precedents (Sky Sports): Everton -6 points (2023-24, on appeal), Derby -21 points (2021-22)
🔭 Why it matters
Available sanctions range from fines to points deductions and other sporting penalties, and some outlets have even raised relegation or the stripping of titles from the period. A ruling this season could upend the title race City currently lead with five wins from five. In the meantime they visit Liverpool on 11 October and host PSG on 14 October.
