Napoli weigh January move for Monza scorer Varela, a €2.5m buy

📰 Napoli have reportedly added Monza goal machine Gustavo Varela to their list of January attacking targets. 📌 Key points 🔭 A Napoli representative watched Varela at Torino on 23 October. 👍 TMW say the scouting report was very positive. ⚽ Varela also scored against Napoli on 28 October. 💶 Monza paid €2.5m for him in the summer. 📈 TMW expect his value to rise at least tenfold. 📝 What happened 🔭 According to TMW, a Napoli representative went to Torino on the evening of Friday 23 October specifically to watch Varela. He scored, although Monza lost 3-2, and the report back was very positive. 🎯 Napoli want a striker to rotate with Rasmus Hojlund. Lorenzo Lucca is the current back-up, and TMW say he could be on his way out again. Manna is described as a big admirer of Varela. ⚽ Varela scored on 43 minutes in Monza's home game against Napoli on 28 October. Football Italia say it was his ninth goal in eight competitive games this season. Napoli won 4-1. 💶 Monza signed him from Benfica this summer for €2.5m plus 20% of a future sale. TMW say his price would reasonably be at least ten times that, pointing to Krzysztof Piatek, who joined Milan from Genoa for €35m in January 2019 and flopped. 📊 By the numbers • Nine goals in eight competitive games (Football Italia) • Monza fee: €2.5m plus 20% of a future sale • TMW estimate: at least ten times his signing fee 🔭 Why it matters There is no official bid yet, only scouting. But for a Napoli side needing attacking cover in January, one of Serie A's top scorers is an attractive option. Monza are likely to drive the price up, and Lucca's future could be key to any deal.
